The Synergy project

Wow! What a night… An enormous bunch of hippies, anti-globalists, lefties and others congregated to the SE1 in what revealed to be an epic party. The main room and dance floor was featuring a great techno sub-genre known as “Psych-Trance” (thanks for Dean for giving me the name). The other rooms, and there were plenty, housed a variety of shows, from a Sikh rock band to tantric music and visuals, anticapitalist poetry, capoeira dances and unintelligible shows with names such as “The magical journey of the spiraling shadow” or “the intergalactic wordsmith Animation”: it’s the sort of performances that can only be appreciated whilst being stoned. And, to the great amusement of my mates, stoned I was…

The culprits…

It all started with the ingestion of Ecuadorian Magic Mushrooms. Apparently, England, is one of the rare countries along with Holland where the sale of those mushrooms, as long as there is no preparation, is legal. I never got anywhere near psychotropic fungi so the experiment was quite a novelty to me. There were no effects whatsoever for over an hour, then a bit of dizziness equivalent to a couple of beers. But soon without even noticing, I sank in a strange state of euphoria and introspectiveness. It was a strange sensation of not being able to focus except on silly things, such as odd decoration patterns or slow rhythmic music. Everything I said came out as confused, it is like when you start saying something and midway you forget the point you were trying to make. My friends, Dean especially, were highly amused busy collecting memorable quotes I would regret saying the day after.

One of my mushroom-induced hallucinations… caught on camera!

The people were incredibly friendly. And I had a multitude of conversations from Indian psychotropic teas and chakras eclosion to the revival of the hippy movement, mostly during my lucid moments. The Sikh rock band was amazing, especially their remake of the theme of “Starsky and Hutch”, and the hysterical ladies moaning in rhymes about the evils of capitalism, labels and GM food were cracking. There was even a meditation area!

Where are the flying yogis?

You can see the rest of the pictures I’ve taken in my photo gallery. I will definitely be back to the next one, scheduled for the 19th of November, but this time with my full cognitive capabilities…. Check the website for details!

Yeah, I’m definitely coming to the next one… And yes, you’ve already seen the memorable SMS you sent me that night ;-)

Your description of losing your point midway reminds me of my first shroom experience at Burning Man - I was able to mentally comprehend and conceptualise ideas differently from my baseline state but was, frustatingly, unable to articulate them, as though some disconnect had occurred in my speech centre. Conversation was really stilted but that was OK as a) I was internally in a great way b) the other guy I was hanging around with was equally verbally disabled.

… See you at the next Synergy Project!

Born naked, wet, and unable to provide for himself, Emir is documenting his struggle to overcome these shortcomings.
