Salsa!

Just been to my first salsa lesson in 4 years with Ken, an ex-colleague of mine. So after catching up and being brought up to date with my former workplace’s gossip we’ve been through all the basic steps of the beginner’s lesson.

The funny thing with salsa classes is that, in Europe at least, they are generally overwhelmingly female, even more so at intermediate and advanced levels. It seems that for some reason, men either drop off at the early stages or are just not that into it.

However, the thing about salsa is that it is the men that are expected to lead the dance. The man decides what to do, and the girl follows, no questions asked… This means that a girl can only dance as well as her partner. Actually, a good male dancer can do great stuff with even an average female dancer. The opposite is not true. Skilled male dancers are very sought after, but they are far less numerous than their female counterparts. This must count for a lot of frustrated female salsa dancers.

And here is where I come to the rescue. Let’s see how long I can stick around this time.
