Having spent my night partying in the freezing cold in Brick lane, I woke up with a sore throat, a dry cough and a headache. Little did I know that the latter would be shared by so many fellow Europeans. My two French flatmates, Mathieu and Magali, didn’t wait for my cognitive faculties to fully recover before debriefing me on what happened.
Gosh. I thought the French voter was smarter than that. From what I can make of it, a big part of the “non” vote wasn’t a euro-sceptic no à-la-british, it wasn’t much of a “non” to the constitution either as the question suggests; it was a simple “piss off” to the government. Yes, a “piss off, Chirac”, we hate you, and some “vive la revolution”. As noted by Mathieu if the government supported the “non” we’d probably be looking at the opposite outcome by now.
I wonder how many of them really understood the 191 page constitution. Here is another example of what nonsense it is to submit such complicated topics to the people. Isn’t this what the elected leaders are elected for? Anyway, my thoughts go to the clever Frenchmen that must be having cervical pains from shaking their heads, such as my flatmates, this friend of theirs, and countless others.
Meanwhile, here on the other side of the channel, it’s a relief: it was somebody else that spoiled it.
vive la France !
L’heure de gloire est arrivee!
Vive la Republique!
Salut Boromir! A + Sara perche ti amo.
